Apart from flying RC aircrafts, building your own plane can make your RC aviation hobby more fulfilling.

There are different ways to build RC planes. Using rc airplane plans is different compared to building from a kit. Plans are more detailed than the assembly drawing supplied with most kits.

In making your RC airline plans, make sure you have an accurate drawing of your target plane. The 3-view drawing consists of the plan view, including the front and side view. A bottom view is also helpful but the most important parts are the fuselage cross sections and wing and tail sections showing the airfoils. The scale of the drawing should have as many plane dimensions as possible. Examples of what should be included in the scale are the plane’s actual size, as well as its wingspan. Take note of all the vital dimensions.

The drawing dimensions of your RC airline plans should be accurate. Do not be disheartened if there are minor inconsistencies. There may be times that the full-size machine dimensions have to be divided by a different scale factor to attain the correct result. However, if there are too many inconsistencies, it is better to abandon the drawing and start another one.

Your RC airplane plans should include a system to balance your craft. When you are having a hard time balancing it, insert an anchor nut into an airframe. You can then screw in a threaded hook and hang the plane from a cord. This system allows you to check the plane’s lateral balance. In instances that one wing tip looks heavy, you can securely attach weight to the opposite tip to regain balance. You have to ensure that the anchor nut is well attached and the system can carry the full weight of the model. The nut of high-wing planes is securely embedded into the wing cabin top. On the other hand, the nut in long-wing planes is placed in the lower underside of the wing center section.

When your RC airplane plans are already intact, you can then move on to the necessary materials and the adhesives to put them all together. There are glues that are specially formulated for model construction. Three thicknesses are available: thin for general construction, medium and thick. The thin glue may dry faster but the thick grades will fill larger gaps.

Cyanoacrylate (CA) glue should be used for balsa-to-balsa joints. Since CA glues cannot be applied to the external construction, aliphatic resin glues like Titebond and Elmers are recommended. For maximum joint strength, epoxy resins should be used to attach the firewall bulkhead to the fuselage, glue the tail plane to the fuselage and join the wing panels.
